STSD Assistant Superintendent Recognized for Leadership

by Randy Ziegenfuss and Lynn Fuini-Hetten on January 22, 2014

Dr. Ziegenfuss PicDr. Randy Ziegenfuss, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, has been recognized as the recipient of the Pennsylvania State Librarians Association’s Outstanding School Administrator Award for 2014.

Nominated by Salisbury Township School District’s Library Media Teachers Barb Jaindl, Jane Brennan, and Robin Burns, Dr. Ziegenfuss has made significant contributions to the support and development of Salisbury’s school libraries over the past three years.  Supporting the goals of TL 2014, Dr. Ziegenfuss has demonstrated commitment to our libraries by developing a vision of learning, supporting the role of the library program in teaching for learning, building the learning environment, and empowering learning through leadership.  One of Dr. Ziegenfuss’s recommendations included the following description of his work and support:

He encourages our Library Media Teachers to be leaders, information specialists, and instructional partners while maintaining the operational side of the school libraries. He developed a forum for collaboration through the implementation of a school learning community for computer technicians, Library Media Teachers, and Instructional Coaches (TLC). This professional learning community meets once a month to share challenges/successes, think critically about the ever-changing roles and needs, and plan professional development. The group participates in policy development on the ground level and helps support and facilitate change across the district. For example, Randy encouraged the Library Media Teachers’ decision to commit to the first ever state-wide Overdrive Consortium which has taken our individual libraries and made them a stronger digital entity as part of the joint CLIU21 Overdrive Consortium. The Library Media Teachers did the heavy lifting, and Randy was alongside to ask the right questions and encourage their risk-taking

Dr. Ziegenfuss will be recognized at the PSLA conference in Hershey this May.

Congratulations to Dr. Ziegenfuss, and we thank him for continuing to inspire others in their support of teaching and learning in the Salisbury Township School District!
