I recently saw the Morning Call article on Salisbury’s wall of honor.
I wanted to nominate Jason P. Hoch, a 2002 graduate, and currently in a flight career with the US Navy. He is my son. Jason has already been on 4 combat deployments, and has made numerous remarkable achievements in his first 10 years with the military, and intends on remaining in for another 10.
As I was obtaining specific information, (I cannot connect with Jason regularly), I realized that I am past the deadline to submit the recommendation. I will gladly run the application over to you as soon as possible, rather than wait for the mail to deliver.
Or, I could simply email the application to you directly.
Thank you for your consideration.
Kathy S. Thomas

Mr. Pochron graduated from SHS in 1973. He has devoted his entire working career to the people of Salisbury Township. He worked and retired from the Salisbury Township Police Department with 25 years of service. He briefly was in charge, as Chief, of the St. Francis DeSales Campus Police Department. Finally settling in the position of Salisbury Township District Judge, a position which he still holds. All during this time he has coached the SHS Baseball Team, again, a position which he still holds as well as Assistant Football Coach spanning a career of almost 40 years. And working with the youth of Salisbury Township, his tenure and guidance has impacted many young lives for the better!

He is a Salisbury graduate of 1977. While in high school he lettered in Cross Country, Basketball and Baseball. He was the falcon award winner his senior year in high school. He graduated from the University of Alabama where he played baseball on a scholarship. Our dad enjoyed team sports and felt it was important because it built teamwork, character and ethics. Upon graduating and getting married, he was a volunteer baseball coach under Frank Yelinko for 2 years. He was later hired as the Cross Country coach at SHS where he was the coach for 26 years. He was then hired as a Track & Field coach where he later became head coach. He was the Track & Field coach for 22 years. Our father also dedicated a lot of time supporting us in our sports at Salisbury. You could often find him during basketball season keeping the stats for both the boys and girls basketball teams.

Being his children, we saw first hand the sacrifice that he put into coaching numerous sports at Salisbury for almost 30 years. He genuinely enjoyed the student athletes that he coached. I, Shannan, his daughter was personally coached by him in both Cross Country and Track. He was always a positive and encouraging coach. He wanted to make the students enjoy what they were doing with no pressure for winning. Over the years, he has enjoyed many successful athletes and has been told, many times, how he has been a wonderful role model and mentor for these students. We feel that he has impacted the lives of a lot of students and given an incredible amount of years coaching and attending Salisbury so that is why we believe he belongs on the Alumni Wall of Honor.

For his service to our country in the Gulf War. For his role in starting and continuing the Yelinko Memorial Tournament to aid scholar athletes. For his role on the coaching staff of the baseball team now. Bob and I were teammates back in the early 80’s. I can think of no finer first inductee.

Mr. Sopko has committed his life to others and specifically the boys of the Salisbury Baseball program on all levels. Sopko has volunteered as the Salisbury High School Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach, as well as the Salisbury Connie Mack Baseball team head coach, and hosting his own clinics for younger players in Salisbury Township. Bob has taught his players, including myself, about the game of baseball and the game of life and he is an inspiration to many. He led the Connie Mack Baseball team to two consecutive League Sportsmanship Awards in Connie Mack and also received a Volunteer Award from Salisbury Township for his dedication to the Salisbury Baseball program. As well as his commitment to the game of baseball, Sopko served in the US Navy and Marine Corps. His countless dedication and commitment to Salisbury Township deserves recognition, recognition that belongs on the Alumni Wall of Honor.

I have been thoroughly impressed with Salisbury’s nearly flawless adoption of one-to-one and the devotion of the faculty through a major paradigm shift. Again, KUDOS!

From bus drivers to one- to ones to teachers and custodians: everyone is committed to making a difference in the lives of our students. As a district, I almost never hear of students being passed over. This commitment is why I get up in the morning on the ugliest of days. It’s why I will chair any unpleasant meeting to represent our district. Its why I will listen to any staff request and try to fulfill its merits. Because commitment deserves acknowledgement and I am proud to be blue & white with you.

thank you for having me leave a comment, I have lived her 44years and from that time till now I see all the changes of the school dist.. my own attended and have valued there learning there now with all the raising school taxes its impossible to understand our children at Salisbury come first as mine and yours did , there too many other than the giving to the children advisory get paid the children have to do it, coaches too many, our school is too small and need some other change many of our teachers have left retired , children find other means of going to school so your funds get less pay more and there has to be some kind of stop to it all children come first and education is a must but they all have to do there part not those who want what they want , people move to the township for smaller school and ect, we need some kind of change make a bigger school of enrollment bring in funds to teach , if government does not give you then why take it from us residents to pay for the higher class , more work less people and they do less work thank you for your time see what they are doing and how to make it all better

Comment on SAS…More than PA Standards! by Steve Zong http://www.salisburysd.us/sas-more-than-pa-standards/#comment-811 Sun, 04 Aug 2013 16:39:50 +0000 http://www.salisburysd.us/?p=760#comment-811 Thanks Lynn. You laid this out well with direct links for all interested stakeholders. I’ve found that the PDE doesn’t always have an easy navigation scheme on their site, but they do offer valuable resources for our common goals and objectives.

Comment on The Cost of Charter and Cyber Charter Schools by Michael Roth http://www.salisburysd.us/the-cost-of-charter-and-cyber-charter-schools/#comment-4 Tue, 05 Feb 2013 19:11:37 +0000 http://www.salisburysd.us/?p=287#comment-4 David, your question is a good one. Charter and Cyber Charter schools are considered public schools, just like the schools in the Salisbury Township School District. Parents, community groups, teachers, or colleges/universities may propose and run charter schools after approval by a local school board and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. They have certain accountability measures in terms of student performance on state-wide tests and following equality standards; however, there are other mandates from which they are relieved. They directly receive public dollars for support, regardless of the actual cost of educating the student. Private schools are not required to follow any state-wide imposed accountability measures, run their own programs, and do not receive direct public funding. Some who completely support school choice at taxpayer expense will often argue for vouchers, which would allow state and local tax revenues to be given to parents who choose private or parochial school education.

Comment on The Cost of Charter and Cyber Charter Schools by David Sabol http://www.salisburysd.us/the-cost-of-charter-and-cyber-charter-schools/#comment-2 Tue, 05 Feb 2013 02:10:16 +0000 http://www.salisburysd.us/?p=287#comment-2 As an early proponent of school choice, I found myself completely blown away once confronted by the financial reality of the idea. I really appreciate the post because it’s fact-based and transparent. And while I want the best for every student, I believe that our tax monies need to stay in-district as opposed to further fragmenting the educational system.

My question in response to your post is: how do charter and cyber-charter schools benefit so much from school choice but parochial schools need to charge a tuition? Is it due to the fact that it has a religious affiliation?

Thanks for shedding some light on an obviously timely and important topic.
